Salem Students Shine at Research Conference

�鶹��Ƶ��ȫ Salem Students Showcase Research Projects

Salem, Ohio – �鶹��Ƶ��ȫ University at Salem held its fall Undergraduate Research Conference, an event that recognizes students for their research and allows them to share what they learned through discussions with the academic staff. This year, there were 56 presentations given by a combined total of 70 students.

The conference is open to all undergraduates in any discipline and in any for-credit course at the Salem campus. Faculty judges evaluate the presentations based on originality; significance; evidence of learning about the research and information gathering process; and overall quality.

The winners of the 2014 Undergraduate Research Conference are:

Long oral presentations - First place: Genna Sink for “Postpartum Depression and its Effects on Parent Child Relationships;” second place: Austin Cope for “First Generation College Students: Social Challenges;” third place: Mariana Bonish for “The Use of College Mentors in Changing Perception of Healthy Eating among Appalachian Adolescents.”

Short oral presentations – First place: Cameron Brinker for “Adolescent Minds, Masculinity, and Self-Confidence;” second place: Caleb Huffman for “Health and Happiness: A Demonstration Using 3 Statistical Techniques,” third place: Heidi Woolweaver for “The Acute Effects Caffeine has on the Anxiety Levels of Older Female and Male College Students.”

Poster presentations – First place: Stacie Arnold for “The Foot Steps of Tomorrow: Parenting Techniques;” second place: Jessica Sands, Sylvia Cintron and Angela Ruthrauff for “Improving ADHA with Diet and Exercise;” third place: Joey-Lynn Corfee, Paige Mountz and Sierra Hull for “Importance of Game Play in Preschool.”

Kent Salem Graduates Leading Ohio’s Cancer Battles with Proton Therapy

In July 2016, Jill Cofojohn became the first radiation therapist in Ohio to use proton therapy to treat a cancer patient. This noteworthy event took place at University Hospital’s Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland where she worked as the advanced lead radiation therapist.

Nine years later, Cofojohn – a �鶹��Ƶ��ȫ Salem graduate – helped introduce this technology in Columbus where she now serves as the lead proton therapist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. There are only three such sites in Ohio and 46 throughout the United States.

East Liverpool ADN Students Receive White Coats During First-ever Ceremony

The ADN program on the East Liverpool Campus held its inaugural White Coat Ceremony during which 44 nursing students received white coats that will help establish their “professional identity” and coincides with the beginning of their clinical training.

Upskill at �鶹��Ƶ��ȫ Launches this Fall

�鶹��Ƶ��ȫ University’s Regional Campus System is launching a new series of workforce development programs designed to help local professionals strengthen the essential skills needed in today’s workplace. The program, titled “Upskill at �鶹��Ƶ��ȫ – Bringing Workforce Development to Your Community,” is part of a statewide initiative at all eight �鶹��Ƶ��ȫ locations across the Regional Campus System.
